Chivington, John M. (John Milton), 1821-1894
Variant namesFrontier Methodist minister and army officer. Played a critical role in defeating confederate forces at the Civil War battle of Glorietta (1862). In November, 1864, led a regiment of the Colorado Volunteers to the Cheyenne's Sand Creek Reservation where troops killed between 100 and 200 Cheyenne (later known as the "The Sand Creek Massacre").
