The Sand Creek Massacre occurred on November 29, 1864 , along the banks of the Sand Creek, near present day Chivington, Colorado. Involved were 100-day volunteer Federal troops under the command of Colonel J.M. Chivington and Cheyene Indians camped at Bent's Fort.
