Coriat (Tufts College Medical School, M.D., 1900), psychiatrist and neurologist, practiced in Boston, Mass., and worked at various area hospitals. He also taught at Tufts and Boston Psychoanalytic Institute.

The Isador H. Coriat Archive is a very fragmentary collection of materials from a noted Boston psychiatrist. These papers had been roughly sorted in large envelopes or files, marked by Dr. Coriat, and were stored in a cardboard carton over a period of years. The original groups remain intact wherever possible, and what little correspondence was contained herein has been kept with the related materials with which it was found. However, over a period of time various users have rearranged the original order--albeit unintentionally--and the lack of dates or specific identification on the many typescript notes and essays created further problems. The archivist has thus seen fit to resort to a somewhat artificial but hopefully useable system of arrangement.

• 1875: born on December 10 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
• 1879: family moved to Boston, Massachusetts
• 1898: while a student at Tufts Medical College, published Laboratory Manual of Physiological and Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology (with A.E. Austin)
• 1900: received M.D. degree from Tufts
• 1900 - 05 : served as assistant physician at the Worcester (Mass.) State Hospital, working for first two years under Adolf Meyer
• 1904: married to Etta Dann on February 1
• 1905: entered private practice in Boston; began work in neurological service at Boston City Hospital, where came under the influence of Morton Prince
• 1906 - 08 : became acquainted with work of Sigmund Freud through writings of A.A. Brill and James Jackson Putnam
• 1906 - 13 : involved with the Emmanuel Movement (community mental health clinic at Emmanuel Church)
• 1908: publication of Religion and Medicine (with Elwood Worcester and Samuel McComb of The Emmanuel Movement)
• 1909: impressed with Freud's lectures on psychoanalysis at Clark University
• 1910: publication of Abnormal Psychology
• 1910 - 14 : author of several papers on hysteria and dementia praecox
• 1912: publication of The Hysteria of Lady Macbeth
• 1913: attended 17th International Congress of Medicine in London, where publicly disagreed with Janet and announced his belief in psychoanalytic theory; beginning of psychoanalytic practice
• 1914: joined informal psychoanalytic study group which met at Putnam's; served as secretary of first Boston Psychoanalytic Society founded by Putnam
• 1915: publication of The Meaning of Dreams
• 1917: publication of What is Psychoanalysis?
• 1918: death of James Jackson Putnam; became foremost psychoanalyst in Boston
• 1920: publication of Repressed Emotions
• 1924: resumed informal psychoanalytic study group meetings
• 1924 - 25 : served as president of the American Psychoanalytic Association
• 1928: publication of Stammering: A Psychoanalytic Interpretation
• 1930: took lead in organizing the second Boston Psychoanalytic Society and served as president until 1932
• 1934: death of Etta Dann Coriat
• 1935: Boston Psychoanalytic Institute founded; served as instructor, trustee, and member of Education Committee
• 1936 - 37 : served another term as president of the American Psychoanalytic Association
• 1941 - 42 : served another term as president of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society
• 1943: died on May 26 of coronary thrombosis at Boston, Massachusetts
