Originated from a merger of the Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SDAP) with the Allgemeine Deutsche Arbeiterverein (ADAV) in 1875; officially banned in 1878 the SAPD retained its delegates in the German Reichstag and in the diets of a number of German states; renamed in 1890 into Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD).
