The Pennsylvania State College's Agriculture Experiment Station began conducting soil surveys in the Lancaster area in 1900 and began cooperating with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) when the Pennsylvania State College's Department of Agronomy was created in 1907. The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, formerly known as the Soil Erosion Service, began in 1933. Today, the USDA-NRCS continues to collaborate with Pennsylvania soil researchers, as well as to offer technical and financial assistance to farmers and landowners.
