San Francisco born author (né Lewis Gerstle Mack) He wrote several books, including The Land Divided, a definitive history of the Panama Canal. His other published works include biographies of French Impressionist painters, histories of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and of the Gerstle family, and books on Spanish architecture. His other research interests included modern architecture and the theater.
