Edward Stanley was born on 1 January 1779 in London, second son of the sixth baronet of Alderley Park, Cheshire, and younger brother to John Thomas Stanley, seventh baronet (1766-1850). He was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge, and was ordained in 1802, serving as curate of Windlesham in Surrey for three years. In 1805, he was appointed rector at Alderley, where he remained until 1837 when he was appointed bishop of Norwich. A Liberal and a reformer, he took a great interest in education, increasing the curriculum and efficiency of local schools, and he introduced reforms in the operation of the poor laws. He died on 6 September 1849 while on holiday in Scotland. A keen geologist and ornithologist, his Familiar history of birds, their nature, habits and instincts was published in two volumes in 1836.
