Henry Bolander completed field work in California in the 1860s.

Bolander was educated at a Lutheran seminary in Columbus, Ohio, but never entered the ministry. He participated in the California State Geological Survey about 1864, and became a specialist on grasses. In 1870, he published A catalogue of plants growing in the vicinity of San Francisco. In later years he was California State Superintendent of Schools, 1871-1875 and taught languages in Portland, Oregon, 1883-1897.
