The Reno-Sparks Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was established in 1945 by Alice L. and Alfred O. Smith. The purpose is to eliminate racial discrimination and segregation. The Society to Underwrite Racial Equality (SURE) co-existed with the NAACP in Reno during the early 1960s and shared many of the same members and goals.
