The Dresser family immigrated to Springfield from Virginia in 1838. Rev. Dresser became a faculty member at Jubilee College near Peoria, Illinois, where he taught for a few years. Rev. Dresser and his wife Louisa Withers Dresser were the parents of eleven children, one of whom was Dr. Thomas W. Dresser, a physician to Mary Todd Lincoln in her final illness.
