Fra Joseph Jimeno Cortes del Rey was sent by royal cedula and patent letter to the New World as Visitor General of his Order of St. Augustine, to inquire into secular abuses occuring in ecclesiastical foundations, and to report on the spiritual state of the Spanish colonies.
