Judy Delton was born May 6, 1931 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She attended the College of St. Catherine, and later taught elementary school in the St. Paul parochial schools. Judy Delton published her first book, Two Good Friends in 1974. Throughout her prolific career, she has written dozens of books for children and young adults, and one book for adults The 29 Most Common Writing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.

Many of Delton's books for children and young adults draw on her own upbringing in St. Paul and her many years attending parochial schools. Her Kitty series follows Kitty from elementary to high school and relates the ups and downs of growing up and close friendships, all within a strict Catholic environment. These books have been praised by critics for their appealing stories and authenticity and realism. Judy Delton's young adult novel, Near Occasion of Sin, also deals with a young girl growing up in strict Catholic family and has been called a starker story that reflects Delton's belief that childhood is not necessarily an innocent time of joy, and that one's earliest influences and experiences play a major role in how one matures and lives one's life. Judy Delton's Angel books are also praised for their realism in dealing with many of the issues such as single-parent families, remarriage, and the birth of a half-sibling that confront many contemporary children.

Her books also address the concerns and emotions of children such as having to give up a pet, not wanting to go to school, or visiting an aging grandparent in a nursing home. Judy Delton has also written other series such as the Pee Wees and Condo Kids, as well as writing light-hearted books for younger readers such as the Brimhall books that feature animals as the main characters.

Judy Delton died December 31, 2001.
