In addition, he wrote the Life and times of Thomas Jefferson (1858). He held several political and governmental positions including Cortland County (N.Y.) Superintendent of Schools, 1843-1847 and New York Secretary of State, 1852-1853. His principle residence was near Cortland, N.Y.
