The Presbyterian minister John Brown was born in Ireland in 1728. In 1753, he was called by New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (New Side) to supply two congregations in Virginia, known as Timber Ridge and New Providence. Brown served as pastor of New Providence Presbyterian Church (Raphine, Va.) until his failing health and the departure of many congregants to Kentucky prompted Brown's departure to Frankfort in 1797. Brown died in 1803.
