Michigan Civil War Centennial Observance Commission
Variant namesOn Oct. 18, 1958, a charge was issued by Gov. G. Mennen Williams to the Michigan Civil War Centennial Commission. A 28-member commssion was appointed to cooperate with the National Civil War Centennial Commission. It was asked to plan and lead in an observance program for the state of Michigan; to encourage communities, schools, and others to act; encourage the preservation of documents and other materials relating to the war; encourage historical research on Michigan's role in the war and its effect on our modern state; and make reports. This commission functioned until Mar. 19, 1960, when it was replaced by a 9-man commission, created by House Bill 220. The name was altered to Civil War Centennial Observance Commission.
