Reynolds moved to Terre Haute, Ind., in 1889 to develop an oilfield. A lawyer, Reynolds was active in the Republican Party until the mid-1890s, when he joined the Social Democratic Party, and became a close friend of Eugene V. Debs. Reynolds ran for governor of Indiana on the Socialist ticket in 1912.
