Burns was born Aug. 16, 1921 in San Francisco, CA; BA (1945) and MA (1947) Gonzaga Univ.; MA, History, Fordham Univ. (1949); Ph. D., Johns Hopkins Univ. (1958); entered the Society of Jesus (1940) and became a Roman Catholic priest (1952); instructor (1947-48), asst. professor (1958-63), assoc. professor (1963-66), and professor of history (1967-76) at Univ. of San Francisco; became senior professor of history (1976) and staff member for the Near Eastern Center and the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (1977), Univ. of CA, Los Angeles; author of many books on Islamic Spain and the medieval Mediterranean region, including Islam under the Crusaders : colonial survival in the thirteenth-century kingdom of Valencia (1974) and Moors and crusaders in Mediterranean Spain (1978).
