Burns was born August 16, 1921 in San Francisco, California; BA and MA, Gonzaga University, 1945 and 1947; MA, History, Fordham University, 1949; Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University, 1958; entered the Society of Jesus (1940) and became a Roman Catholic priest in 1952; professor of history, UCLA, beginning in 1958; author of many books on Islamic Spain and the medieval Mediterranean region, including Islam under the Crusaders: colonial survival in the thirteenth-century kingdom of Valencia (1974) and Moors and crusaders in Mediterranean Spain (1978).
