In 1929, Lasseter claimed to have discovered a rich gold-bearing reef in the Petermann Range country in Central Australia. He approached John Bailey in 1930 about arranging an expedition to locate the reef. Bailey formed the Central Australian Gold Exploration Co. Ltd which financed two expeditions. The first expedition left Alice Springs on 21 July 1930 comprising Fred Blakeley, leader, George Sutherland, surveyor, Philip Taylor, engineer and driver, Errol Coote, pilot of the plane, Captain Blakeston-Houston, the Governor General's aide as 'explorer', and Lasseter as guide. No trace of the reef was found and Lasseter died without returning from this expedition, his death certificate stating he died on 30 January 1931.
