David Thomas was an agriculturist in Cayuga County, New York, who specialized in horticulture and fruit trees. He was a frequent contributor to the Genesee Farmer. He was formerly the chief engineer of the Erie Canal west of Rochester and later became the principal engineer of the Welland Canal in Canada. Jesse Buel was a New York printer turned agriculturist, who published The Albany Cultivator.

David Thomas was a Quaker and civil engineer. Thomas Evans was a Quaker minister and a founder of Haverford College. Joseph Thomas was a Quaker teacher at Haverford College, but also was involved in the founding of Swarthmore College.
