John Brandl was born August 19, 1937 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He received a B.A. in economics from St. John’s University (Collegeville, Minnesota) in 1959, and an M.A. (1962) and Ph.D. (1963) in economics from Harvard University.
After various collegiate teaching and research positions as well as work in the Unites States Department of Defense and Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Dr. Brandl accepted the position of Associate Professor and Director at the University of Minnesota School of Public Affairs in 1969. He was promoted to full professor and 1970 and held the position of Director until 1976. In 1977, the School of Public Affairs was renamed the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs; Dr. Brandl remained on the faculty in Public Affairs and served as Dean of the Institute from 1997 to 2002.
He was a State Senator (1987-1990) and State Representative (1977-1978, 1981-1986) in the Minnesota Legislature representing Minneapolis area districts.
Dr. Brandl served as President of the Association of Public Policy Analysis and Management (1986-1987), President of the Citizens League of the Twin Cities (1992-1993), Regent on the St. John’s University Board of Regents (1991-2000), and Fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration (elected 1994). He was awarded the Governors Association Award for Distinguished Service to State Government (1996) and the Fordham Foundation Prize for Academic Excellence (2005). He gained a national reputation as a public policy expert and school choice advocate.
John Brandl died August 18, 2008 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
