As the daughter of a politician, Eliza often helped to fulfill her father's social obligations, and once even helped to entertain President Hayes in Olympia. Leary attended boarding school in Portland at St. Helen's Hall. On April 21, 1892 she married lawyer and businessman, John Leary. Her husband passed away in 1905. Leary was quite busy socially.
