Leary, Eliza Ferry.

Washington State pioneer, Eliza Ferry Leary (1851-1935) was born in Waukegan, Illinois. She was the daughter of Elisha P. Ferry, the first governor of Washington State, and Sarah Brown Kellogg Ferry. As the daughter of a politician, Eliza often helped to fulfill her father's social obligations, and once even helped to entertain President Hayes in Olympia. Leary attended boarding school in Portland at St. Helen's Hall. On April 21, 1892 she married lawyer and businessman, John Leary. Her husband passed away in 1905. Leary was quite busy socially. In 1917, she organized the Elisha P. Ferry chapter of the Children of the American Revolution. She was the Honorary Vice President General of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Mt. Vernon Ladies Association of the Union, a Red Cross member and active in the marking of the Old Oregon Trail. In 1934, a book about early Washington history through Leary's eyes, Through Historic Years with Eliza Leary Ferry, was published by Laura Virginia Wagner.
