Born in Hanover, Va., son of Va. governor Wilson Cary Nicholas. Officer in War of 1812. Moved to Louisiana in 1820 as a sugar planter and later became a U.S. senator.

Robert Carter Nicholas served in the War of 1812 as a captain and major, attended the College of William and Mary, then moved to Louisiana in 1820 and became a sugar planter in Terrebonne Parish. He was a U.S. Senator for Louisiana (1836-1841) and Secretary of State of Louisiana (1843-1846).
