Clara Louise Hilligass was a 1908 graduate of the St. Luke's Hospital Training School for Nurses in St. Louis. During WWI, she joined Base Hospital 21 (the base hospital associated with Washington University) and sailed with the unit to France in May 1917. She served as a nurse with the unit from 1917-1919. After returning to the US, Hilligas worked at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. In 1942, she became nursing supervisor at Barnes Hospital until retiring in 1955.
