Variant namesGerman children's author, born in Berlin, Germany in 1934. Emigrated to the United States after World War II began. Has written almost twenty books for children, including picture books, murder mysteries for older children, humorous books, and books dealing with the past as well as the present. Courage, independence of thought, and peronal freedom are frequent themes in Levitin's more serious young adult novels.

Sonia (Wolff) Levitin was born August 18, 1934, in Berlin Germany and immigrated to United States in 1938. She attended University of California-Berkley from 1952-54 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1956. She received her postgraduate degree at San Francisco State College in 1960. She began her career as a writer and educator as a junior high school teacher in Mill Valley, CA from1956-57. Her writings as a children's and young adult author have gathered numerous awards. She was first honored by the Jewish Book Council of America in 1971 for her autobiographical first novel Journey to America.
