Pierson Barton Reading was born in 1816 in New Jersey. In 1830 he moved to Vicksburg, Miss. to become a cotton broker. He joined the Peter H. Burnett party going to Calif. and Ore. in 1843 and split in Fort Hall with the Joseph B. Chiles' party. Reading settled in Shasta County, Calif.
