H. V. Wilson (1863-1939) was born in Baltimore, Md., and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Johns Hopkins University. He joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina in 1891, as a professor of biology and department chairman of zoology. He was also the director of the United States Fisheries Laboratory at Beaufort, N.C.
