Sir John Wyndham Pope-Hennessy (1913-1994), art historian of Italian Renaissance painting and sculpture, was educated at Oxford and became director of the Victoria and Albert Museum (1967-1973) and the British Museum (1974-1976). He moved to the United States in 1977 to become consulting chairman of European painting for the Metropolitan Museum in New York (1977-1986) and was concurrently a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.
