Gen. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912), commanded the 18th United States Infantry's 1866 expedition to build a wagon road from Fort Kearney, Nebraska, to Big Horn mountains of Montana and establish Fort Philip Kearney, Dakota Territory. He was in command of the Rocky Mountain District.

First Presbyterian Church was founded in Franklinton, Ohio 1806. Second Presbyterian split from First in 1839, and Third was founded by Second in 1852. Westminster was founded in 1854, and Third became First Congregational Church in 1856. Second and Westminster Churches merged to become Central Presbyterian Church in 1901.

Henry Beebee Carrington was born in Wallingford, Connecticut on March 2, 1824. He graduated from Yale University in 1845 (B.A.) and attended Yale University Law School in 1847. He practiced law in Ohio. During the Civil War he was appointed colonel of the 18th U.S. Infantry (May, 1861) and brigadier general of volunteers (Nov, 1862). Carrington supervised military tribunals in Indiana and Ohio, trials later ruled "illegal" by the Supreme Court. He was mustered out of volunteer service in 1865. He joined his regiment in 1866 and established Fort Philip Kearney in the Dakota Territory. He led military campaigns against the Sioux Indians, negotiated the 1872 treaty with the Flathead Indians of Montana and provided for their removal to the reservation in 1891, and conducted relocation and census studies of other tribes. Carrington wrote several popular American history texts. He died in Hyde Park, Massachusetts on October 26, 1912.
