Jesuit, professor, physicist, and author.
Tobin was born in Boston (1894), entered the Society of Jesus (1911), earned a B.A. (1917) and M.A. (1918) from Woodstock College, was ordained (1925), and earned a Ph.D. from Gregorian University in Rome (1931). He first taught physics in the Student Army Training Course at Boston College (1918-1922). Tobin began teaching at Boston College in 1925 and served as chair of the Physics Department for 24 years, during which time he established the B.S. and the M.S. degrees in physics. During World War II, Tobin coordinated Boston College's Civilian Pilot Training Program. The author of numerous articles and an active member in many professional organizations, Tobin died in 1965.
