Business manager. Herman Knapp was born in Vermont, but his family moved to Vinton, Iowa, when he was four. He received his B.S. (1883) in scientific agriculture from Iowa State College and began working at Iowa State in various capacities in 1884. Among his positions were Secretary to the President (1884); Assistant Professor of Agriculture (1885- ); Superintendent of the Bookstore (1887-1933); and he served as Acting President (1926-1927)of the University.
Knapp also was in charge of the college cadet corps for a time (1898) and became a captain and major in the Iowa National Guard. Knapp married Mary Woodruff McDonald in 1885. He was honored by Iowa State with an honroary doctor of law degree and Herman Knapp day in 1933.
