Biographical History

Irish family that were early settlers of Clark County, Ill. Nineveh served as County Commissioner for two terms and in the Black Hawk War. His brother William moved to the south and worked as an overseer on a plantation in Louisiana until he died in 1832 and left his estate to Nineveh's children. Samuel Shaw was in Rensselaer County, New York by 1791 when he received a lease for land from Stephen Van Rensselaer, the proprietor of the Manor of Rensselaerwyck. He is listed in Rensselaer County histories as a captain (in Berlin, N.Y.) during the Revolution. Shaw settled in a section of Stephentown which in 1806 became Berlin, or more accurately, South Berlin, just north of the town. For over the next one hundred years lots were added and subtracted, and divided among family members.

See the Van Rensselaer Manor Papers (accession number SC7079) for additional Shaw family leases and maps.
