Alfred Young, the stage name of John Carolan, was director of senior Dramatics at Smith College, 1892-1917, with the exception of 1893. He also was involved with directing plays at other colleges and stage venues.

Young was engaged to direct a play chosen by the senior class and with only a few exceptions they were Shakespeare plays. Once the play was chosen, members of Smith College's Dept. of Elocution trained individual actors in their parts. Young would send instructions as to the overall shape of the play and would come to campus for final rehearsals and production.
