Vagts, a diplomatic and military historian, was born in Germany and served in the German Army in World War I. He came to the United States as Hitler came to power in Germany and taught at Harvard and Radcliffe before joining Princeton's Institute for Advanced Studies from 1938-1942. Vagts served as a consultant to the U.S. Office of Economic Warfare during World War II and was an independent researcher and writer after 1942.
