Harold R. Winton was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. Lieutentant Colonel Winton graduated from the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, New York, in 1964; served in Germany; two tours in Vietnam; studied at Stanford University; taught at the Department of History, USMA, and the Allied Staff, Berlin; and commanded an infantry battalion in Germany. In 1982, he was assigned to the Combined Arms and Services Staff School (CAS3), Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He became the first faculty member of the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) in 1983. He retired from active duty in 1989 and in 1990 joined the School of Advanced Airpower Studies (SAAS), Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
