Melinas C. Leavenworth of Connecticut was an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army between 1833 and 1840, serving in Florida and Louisiana. Both a medical doctor and a botanist, he discovered many new and rare plants. The genus of plants known as Leavenworthii was named in his honor. He was appointed an assistant surgeon with the 12th Connecticut Infantry Regiment in February 1862 and died November 16, 1862.
