Fine, Sidney Asher, 1903-1982
Sidney Asher Fine (September 14, 1903 – April 23, 1982) was an American lawyer, politician and jurist. A member of the Democratic Party, he notably served as the U.S. Representative from New York's 23rd (1951-1953) and 22nd (1953-1956) congressional districts.
Born in New York City, he attended public schools there before graduating from City College of New York and from Columbia Law School. Fine was admitted to the bar in 1926 and commenced practice in New York City. He was a member of the New York State Assembly for Bronx County's 2nd district for one term from 1945 and 1946 and was a member of the New York State Senate from the 24th district from 1947 to 1950, sitting in the 166th and 167th New York State Legislatures.
Fine was elected as a Democrat to the 82nd, 83rd and 84th United States Congresses, holding office from January 3, 1951, until his resignation on January 2, 1956. He was elected Justice of the New York Supreme Court in 1955 and was re-elected in 1969, serving as a Justice from 1956 to 1973 and an Official Referee of the Supreme Court from 1974 to 1975.
Residing in New York City after his retirement, he died there and was interred at Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York.
