Progressive-minded young men founded the Watauga Club in 1884. Its first concern was the strengthening of North Carolina in all aspects--agriculture, industry, education, health, statesmanship, art, literature, moral and spiritual values. The club was instrumental in the founding of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and emphasized the need for instruction in mechanic arts.
