The WSSC was created by the Maryland General Assembly in 1916 to provide water and sewerage services to suburban Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.
The WSSC produces ten-year water supply and sewerage disposal plans and operates under five-year water and sewer programs, subject to approval by the governing bodies of the two counties. It is composed of four departments, engineering, Financial, Legal, and Secretary or Administrative, and continues to provide water, sewerage, and stormwater drainage services to the growing suburban Maryland area.
