Biographical Note: Trained as a civil engineer, Wolman spent his career merging engineering with hygiene and public health issues. His areas of expertise were water treatment and water supply.
Wolman was born in Baltimore in 1892 and received a B.A. (1913) and a B.S. (1915) from the Johns Hopkins University. He worked for the Maryland Department of Health serving as the Chief Engineer from 1922 to 1939. In 1937 he began his long tenure with the Johns Hopkins University. Until retiring in 1962, Wolman served variously as professor and chairman of the Department of Sanitary Engineering and professor in the School of Hygiene and Public Health. He also was an editor of three technical journals.
