French educator and political figure, Joseph Lakanal was elected deputy to the National Convention during the French Revolution; participated in the trial of Louis XVI and the preparation of the Constitution of 1793; and was instrumental in the establishment of France's national university system. He fled to Louisiana upon the fall of Napoleon and was appointed president of the College of Orleans in Aug. 1822; however he resigned in 1823, discouraged by lack of support.
