The Springfield Land District Office was created by act of Congress of May 8, 1822. All land in Edwardsville District lying north of line separating townships thirteen and fourteen north of baseline for third rincipal meridian was assigned to new district. In 1831 and 1834 respectively Quincy and Northwestern Land Districts were created, encompassing some of land formerly contained in Springfield District.

As other land offices located within Illinois were discontinued during 1855 and 1856, Springfield Land Office assumed responsibility for sale of remaining public land in each. Springfield Office was discontinued by act of Congress of July 31, 1876. In 1879 U.S. Department of the Interior transferred records of all ten office to State of Illinois at which time they were taken into custody of Auditor of Public Accounts.
