The Danville Land District Office was created by an act of Congress of February 19,1831. Land lying north of line separating townships sixteen and seventeen north of baseline for second and third principal meridians, formerly parts of Vandalia and Palestine Districts, was assigned to new office. In 1834 Northwestern and Northeastern Districts were created, partially from that portion of Danville District lying north of line separating townships thirth and thirt-one north.

The Danville Land Office was abolished on December 16, 1856, and responsibility for selling all remaining public land in district was transferred to Springfield Land Office.
