Initially part of the Diocese of Bardstown (1808-1841) and then Louisville (1841-1853), Covington was established as a diocese in 1853. Its ordinaries during the period covered by this collection were George Aloysius Carrell, S.J. (1803-1868) from 1853-1868; Augustus Maria Toebbe (1829-1884) from 1870 to 1884; Camillus Paul Maes (1846-1915) from 1885 to 1915; and Ferdinand Brossart (1849-1930) from 1916 to 1923.
