Judith Mara Gutman is a New York-based author and specialist in the field of the social history of photography.

She was born in New York City in 1928 to Victor and Anna Markowitz and married historian Herbert George Gutman (1828-1985) in 1950. Judith Gutman has taught at several universities, and has lectured and written as an independent scholar on topics exploring imagery and society. Her publications include works on American social history, the history of photography in India, and a biography of Lewis W. Hine.
