Gallin, Alice, 1921-2018

Mary Alice Gallin was born on December 30, 1921 in New York City to Alice and William Gallin. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1942, and later earned a master's from Fordham University and PhD from The Catholic University of America.

Gallin taught history and worked as a research analyst in the US Military Intelligence Service before joining the Ursuline Order in 1946. From 1950 to 1978, she served on the faculty and administration of the College of New Rochelle. From 1976 to 1992, she served in the administration of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, becoming its Executive Director. Gallin was instrumental in the publication and implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution issued by Pope John Paul II in 1990 to guide and refine Catholic higher education. She served on the Board of Trustees of Notre Dame University, Viterbo College, Iona College, and St. Bonaventure University. She also served as interim president of St. Bonaventure University from 1993 to 1994, the first woman to lead that institution.

Throughout her career, Gallin dedicated herself to research and publishing on the history of American Catholic higher education, authoring several books, monographs, numerous articles, delivering numerous papers, and receiving twenty-one honorary degrees.

Gallin died on September 13, 2018 in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
