Sinclair, Mary P., 1918-

Mary P. Sinclair was born Sept. 23, 1918 in Chisholm, Minn. She graduated in 1940 from the College of St. Catherine, in St. Paul, with majors in chemistry and English. During the 50's, she worked for the Library of Congress where she became familiar with the papers of the Atomic Energy Commission. She later moved to her husband's hometown of Midland, Mich. where she worked as a librarian and technical writer for Dow Chemical until she left to raise her children. When, in 1967, Consumers Power announced its plan to build a nuclear power plant near Midland, she led a grassroots campaign against it. Since, she has been involved in many groups concerned with nuclear energy and the environment. She founded the Saginaw Valley Nuclear Study Group (1969), helped to organize the National Interveners (1972) a coalition of anti-nuclear groups, and organized the Great Lakes Energy Alliance (1978). She received a M.S. degree in environmental communication from the University of Michigan in 1973, and was a lecturer there from 1974-78.
