William Cushman Avery was born in Edenton, N.C. on 1831 Sept. 21, the son of Rev. John Avery and Ann Paine. He was tutored at home by his mother, and graduated from Burlington College, N.J. in 1851. He taught school for several years, then studied medicine at the University of Pa., completing his medical education in Paris.

After practicing medicine in Marshall, Tex. he returned to the family homestead in Greensboro, Hale Co., Ala., and at the outbreak of the Civil War, joined as a private. While in Va., he contracted measles, then typhoid fever, and subsequently was given a medical discharge.

A nature lover all of his life, he published several articles on ornithology. He accumulated a large collection of birds which, shortly after his death on 1894 Mar. 11, was sold to the University of Ala., Tuscaloosa. In addition to his interest in ornithology he was a hunter and a well-known dog trainer.
