Illinois War Council
Variant namesThe Illinois State Council of Defense (1941-1943), composed of the Governor as ex offico chairman; Lt. Governor; Senate president pro tempore; Speaker of the House; Senate minority floor leader; House majority and minority leaders; Illinois Commission on Inter-Governmental Cooperation chairman; and nine defense experts appointed by the Governor, was created on April 17, 1941. Council duties included cooperation with the Council of National Defense, federal agencies, and other state councils; local defense committee organization (mayors, village or town and county board presidents could establish councils to exercise power and duties similar to the State Council for local jursidictions); state and local defense activity coordination; and investigative hearing responsibilities for which the Council could adopt its own procedures and subpoena witnesses. The council's name was changed to the Illinois War Council (1943-1945) but it was abolished when WWII ended (1945).
