Saco-Lowell Shops
Variant namesTextile machinery manufacturing company, Saco and Biddeford, Me. Formed in 1912 from the consolidation of Saco-Pettee Company and the Lowell Machine Shops. Saco-Pettee's history extends back on one side to 1825 when the Pettee Machine Works, Newton, Mass., were established and to 1839 on the other side when the Saco Water Power Company was founded. In 1897 these firms formed the Saco and Pettee Machine Shops. In 1930 the firm consolidated all its operations in Maine. In 1948 it acquired a plant in Sanford, N.C. and in the late 1950's it moved most of its operations to the South. Acquired by Maremont Corp. in 1960.
